Good deeds and whinging and life ...
I have a sign over my house, I must do. Where ever that house might be, I have a sign. Or maybe it's over me. Anyhow, it says: Waifs and strays, come see her!

I walked out of the house yesterday afternoon to put some rubbish in the big bin and this frantic, well-fed and collarless Staffy bitch rushed up to me, eyes rolling, panting. I'd never seen her before, and neither had various neighbours. So she stayed the night. She was lovely, very friendly, the most gorgeous eyes. Obviously loved by someone, but the stupid someone had neglected to give her a collar and tag with a phone number I could call. I took her to the vet this morning and luckily she was microchipped, so she'll be going home.

Of course, now I'm worried that she was dumped for some reason, and even with a microchip no-one will claim her. She's too lovely to die a week from now in the pound. I'll have to make sure she's okay. I can't keep her, she's not cat friendly, but I'd like to make sure she's okay.

In the past I've kept the waifs and strays that have found me, but that's not feasible at the moment. After a quarter century of having many, many animals, I'm looking to stay permanently downsized.

And for my whinge, I'll just say that while I'm sure Ron Moore loves his wife very much, I wish she wouldn't get involved with the Battlestar Galactica podcasts. I want to hear him talk about the show without her interruptions and observations which, quite frankly, are not what I buy the dvds to hear.

Over the weekend I wrote the Stargate story for the magazine, and I'm pretty pleased with it, given I really don't do short fiction. I also finalised the outline for the next Stargate novel, Consequences, and that I am pleased with. Although the slash fans are going to hate my guts, if they don't already. Because -- shock horror! -- I intend writing about a relationship that is canon within the series. So shoot me!

In the next two days I have two manuscripts to read, for various reasons. And then I knuckle down to pick up with the next Rogue Agent novel, Witches Inc.

Busy ... busy ... busy ...

Oh, I know. It's deadly. But her family's been found, I'm told, so that's a happy ending. Maybe the silly people will learn a lesson from this.

Well, yes, and that would be why I get very very tired of the anti-shippers attacking people who support something *that's in the show*.

By all means, have a disagreement about stuff that other fans have made up. But when it's in the freakin' show people, that means it's real, it's true, and it's part of the canon. The fact you don't like it means zip, in terms of what other people write. Because they are taking their lead from *the show*.

Do I sound tetchy? Well, I am. Because I've watched folk get attacked, abused, hounded, villified and all round made utterly miserable by so-called fans who've decided to make up an Alternate Reality version of the show then carry on as though their version is the canon version. And I'm really really really over it.

Well don't worry about it then...I'm with you 100% You're doing a wonderful job...BTW I just read the excerpt (Do no harm)and, even though it's not going to be as shippy as Alliances (hey, you said so yourself!!!), I really look forward to grabbing it...I'll be in the States (Nevada and California) this coming May, do you think it'll be available there then?

Aaaak! Sorry, I missed this!

Thank you. And no, it's not really a shippy focus story, given its placement in the timeline. A hint or two, no more. It is due out in May, but I'm not certain of the exact date. But I'm pretty sure by the end of May.

Found many copies of Empress at BooksAMillion this evening. Now they have one less. {G}

Also--re the Duncan book--have you seen This Rough Magic and The Shadow of the Lion by Mercedes Lackey, Eric Flint, and Dave Freer? Also fantasy, also set in Venice in about the same period. There's something about Venetian historical fantasy that just deserves its own subgenre.

Bless you! *g*

I have no idea how this book is going to go. It's not a comfy, cosy, bog-standard read ... and not everyone is going to be happy about that.

And thanks for the recommendation! I agree about Venice -- it's such a rich and unlikely place!

Well you know I'm not a fan of the ship, partly because the show writers pussyfooted around and never looked it in the eye and dealt with the consequences. So on the one hand your choice of topic doesn't thrill me, but on the other your choice of title gives me hope that you might write the story that I would've really, really have liked to see on the show.

Do yo know which month your story will appear? I'll keep a look out.

Good job I don't live in Oz because I'd probably take in your stray ;-) I keep having these crazy moments of wishing for a dog. Fortunately sanity has prevailed to date because I really don't have the time for a dog.

Well, I've never been happy with the way the producers never finally dealt with the issue. It made me cross -- they started it, they should've finished it, I think. Actually, I think they did, at the end of season 8. Very understated, very subtextual, but the answer was there, I think. But then they got 2 more seasons and things just got ridiculous!

I will point out that the ship aspect is only part of the story. It's not the whole story, not by a long shot. The book is both a sequel to my first novel, Alliances, and the S4 episode Entity. And my aim is to tie up some loose ends in a believable way.

But I've always liked the ship itself, so I have every intention of dealing with it as a real aspect of the show and the characters -- because that's the way it is on screen.

As for the dog, her owners were tracked down so hopefully she's back home tonight. It got a bit messy and complicated, but fingers crossed that's the last of her escapes.

Maybe one day you'll have a dog. Life is better with a dog, I think. *g*

Unlike most people I know, I found Entity thought-provoking. It presented some interesting dilemmas. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

And yeah, I agree, definitely, life is much better with a dog ;-)

Well, I confess I'm at a loss to know how you could think it *wasn't* thought provoking! There's so much material in there, not only from a show-specific pov, but from a general life and sf pov.

I intend to play and play and play ... *g*

As far as I know, there was a happy ending. Things got a bit fraught when it turned out the micro chip info was out of date, but the dog's people called the council and I believe it's all sorted now.

Sheesh. Maybe they'll wise up now so this can't happen again!

My dear girl, of course they hate you already. And by you I mean us (every single one of us talentless hacks who have dared to sully the shining greatness of their squee-love objects, whatever they might be)...

Don't try to seek logic - or even, y'know, sanity - in their mean-spirited, incoherent spewings. Just go ahead, write the good book that we know you will (because being a professional writer and not a frothing-mouthed fanatic, that's exactly what you'll do) and be pleased that your work has the seal of approval from the people who actually do own the universe, not the people who just think that they do. Be content in the fact that you're going to write a great piece of work that many sane, non-obsessive people will thoroughly enjoy.

Of course the nutters hate you, because you're doing what they can only dream of, what they will never get the chance to do. They'll never be happy. They'll never like your work. They have nothing better to do but bitch, no life but to screech and whine from behind the cover of internet psuedonyms.
And with every word you write, you anger them just a little bit more; so if you ever needed an incentive to write, there it is...

Oh, James! *g*

I have to say, you know, that for the most part I love fans. I am one, and I love most of us. I think the percentage of folk who perhaps aren't as generous or tolerant or accepting as I for one would like them to be is pretty slight. And I think they're pretty loud, and that can create an impression that they speak for more people than in fact they do. When you read some of the things they've said about the producers and the actors, you do have to wonder what's going on. And I don't believe they speak for the majority of fans.

I know you've had far more personal impact from these darkside fans than I have -- I'm glad I've not had to deal with it so much. But that might change. If it does, I shall bear your advice in mind!

You speak truth; I did come off a bit negative there. I guess as an ex-fan myself I get frustrated sometimes by the behaviour I see on line; I expect better of people, and it's dissapointing when you see that some fan forums are just echo chambers for bitter, angry people. But then I think of all the savvy, intelligent, engaged fans I know and I'm thankful...

Well, I think you were voicing a level of frustration that's not unreasonable. Some fans are a bit hardcore, and that can be quite offputting. And you're quite right, the internet can be a real echo chamber that distorts the reality of how fans are feeling. And there is a certain sub-set of fandom that's really very nasty, very aggressive, towards anyone they perceive as threatening their interpretation of events. I guess what frustrates me is that these are people who are denying on-screen canon in favour of their reimagining of the show, and then attacking the folk who actually follow that canon. It's a bit screwy.

But it's mad to let that nasty minority spoil the fun. *g*

I really can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to seeing your treatment of this.

I would have been fine with them never touching a romantic relationship between any of the characters. But once they did, it ticked me off that they kept waffling around with it. Wusses.

Well, I intend to have fun. Whatever else happens ... *g*

As for the romance angle, well, yes. Absolutely there are good arguments for Not Going There. But truthfully, I thought they started setting up the possibility way back in S1. Not the pilot, perhaps, but definitely in Broca Divide. And since they did go there, it would've been nice to have it dealt with.

I really do feel they did it sideways at the end of Mobius. I mean, not only did you have the overt interaction between the AU Sam and Jack -- again!!!! -- at the end, the way the shot was framed, Sam and Jack were sitting together on the dock, with Teal'c and Daniel set back, literally getting their backs. I think there have been many, many instances of that kind of subtle hinting. In the ep where Sam was on the run from the super soldier, and Jack and Teal'c turn up at the end. Jack sits with her, and puts his arm around her, and Teal'c turns his back to give them privacy and is quite clearly standing guard over them -- and that's like S7, I think. So the thread was always running under there, even though they pulled right back from the overt stuff that was in S4.

So I'm going to have a fun time playing with it, and the slash fans will put contracts out on me, and there you go. *g*
