Wobbling along ...
So Empress of Mijak (aka as Empress) has gone to reprint in Australia. That's very encouraging. And Innocent Mage went to another reprint locally a couple of weeks ago, and that's just as encouraging. Cue the author heaving a great big sigh of relief!

Ended up getting caught doing internet housekeeping chores this morning, but now I've finished another chapter of Witches Inc. I expect the momentum to pick up considerably from here on.

Also, the lovely people at Orbit posted me an SFX magazine review of Empress, which contains (among other things) this lovely quote:

'Miller's protagonists are memorable, her setting detailed, cohesive, and full of texture and original touches.'

The reviewer, one Barbara Davies, wasn't unalloyed in her praise. While she calls the book 'ambitious, impressive and intriguing,' she thinks it's too long, and finds Hekat a pretty tough customer. I agree with the latter, but not the former, but overall the review is wonderfully thoughtful and helpful to a writer still coming to grips with her craft and technique.

When a reviewer is as considered and judicious as this, I have no problem with some sour mixed up with the sweet.

Congrats on the reprint. Seems like a good week for them ;-)

BTW, I'm watching Stargate SG1 for the first time at the moment (just finished S3), and since you're the first person I think of whenever SG is mentioned, I thought I'd share. I just realised Teal'c = Clunk, O'Neill shares a lot of attributes with Hal, and Carter + Daniel Jackson fit neatly into the Navcom. (Once again I'm very glad I wrote my stuff before a TV series aired!)

What interests me more is whether every fictional gang needs the Nerdy one, the Brainy one, the Impatient/humourous one and the Loyal/Honorable one. Hell, I use to read Krazy comic (the UK one) in the 70's as a kid, and even that gang fits this profile.

So, is this the unwritten Law of Fictional Gangs in action? Like a set of D&D characters ... Thou Shalt Balance the Skills?

LOL! You need to expand your acquaintanceship, Simon ... *g*

I think it's fair to say that there are some archetypes that often find their way into group-based storytelling. I'm not hugely familiar with Blake's 7, for example, but if memory serves there's some personality-trait similarity there, too.

But I'm pretty sure they've followed that template in Stargate Atlantis. I guess they figure if it ain't broke, don't fix it. *g*

I'd be shocked if a reviewer ever actually gave unalloyed praise. It always surprises me when they don't take an antagonistic approach to a book (a sadly common experience), so for a critic to be as warm as that, cheers and well done.

I've noticed lately that there seems to be a bit more balanced reviewing going on than there used to be, and some critics are even learning to review books for what they are rather than what they think they should be, which has always been the signal flare to me to ignore a review. Sadly, too many critics fall into that trap, and not just in fandoms either, but in general reviews as well.

Well, some do. I have, in the past, simply because I've loved a book to bits and don't have any complaints. I actually do believe that some books are just a perfect read -- and on the rare occasions when I do a book review, I approach it as a reader, not a writer. I comment on the reading experience I had because really -- I'm not qualified to do anything else.

Someone I know just had the experience of being reviewed very negatively by someone, in a major newspaper, when it was clear the reviewer hadn't even read the book. I find that kind of intellectual dishonesty to be utterly breathtaking. I can't even begin to wrap my brain around it, on so many levels.

The thing about book reviews is that you need to know the agenda of the person writing the review before you take on board anything that's said. And some people really do have serious agendas. It can get frustrating, but that's the nature of the beast,

And just to balance the scales, SFF world trashed Empress. Guess it wasn't that reader's cup of tea, eh? *g*

I saw an add on gateworld.net for Empress the other night! Very cool to see that.

Just to clear up a small and probably not very important point, Karen, my review of your book 'Empress' appeared in Starburst not SFX.
I'm glad you found it helpful and didn't take any of the negative comments it contained to heart. :)

Ah! Thanks for the clarification. I got a one-sheet photocopy with a note it was from SFX. Also, gosh! Hello! *g*

And no, truly, not to heart. At least, not in a bad way. Thoughtful, considered and genuine feedback is always hugely appreciated.
